Fall/Spring 2022/2023 Jazz Ensemble/Combo Audition Information
The Alabama Jazz Ensemble, The Alabama Jazz Band, and the Alabama Jazz Combos Audition Information and times:
Monday August 15th, 2022 – Auditions will begin at 1:00 PM in the Jazz Rehearsal Room 201
1:00pm Saxophones
2:30pm Rhythm Section (Guitar/Piano/Bass/Drum Set)
Tuesday August 16th, 2022 – Auditions will begin at 1:00 PM in the Jazz Rehearsal Room 201
1:00pm Trumpet
2:00pm Trombone
Process
The audition process will be as follows:
- Check this page for information and excerpts under your primary instrument.
- Signup for an audition at the following link (also found on the above page): Spring 2023 UA Jazz Ensemble and Combo Audition Registration (LINK WILL BE LIVE Mid-JULY)
- Show up the the Jazz Rehearsal Room (JRR) 201 in Moody School of Music
- The results of the placements will be posted on this page by the end of the day on Wednesday August 17th, 2022 on the Jazz Studies bulletin board.
All Saxophones
- For Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band play the provided Excerpt
- For Combos play a prepared standard of your choice (one time through the melody, improvise one chorus without accompaniment.)
- Sight Reading will be provided

All Brass
- For Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band play the provided Excerpt
- For Combos play a prepared standard of your choice (one time through the melody, improvise one chorus without accompaniment.)
- Sight Reading will be provided
Guitar/Piano/Vibraphone
- Play the provided Excerpt (melody and then changes)
- Play a prepared standard of your choice (one time through the melody, improvise one chorus, and comp for one chorus)
- Sight Reading will be provided
Bass
- Play the provided Excerpt
- Play a prepared standard of your choice (one time through the melody, improvise one chorus, and walk for one chorus)
- Sight Reading will be provided
Drum Set/Percussion
- Play the provided Excerpt (note the tempo and play melody rhythm as written)
- Play several styles in 4 or 8 measure phrases i.e. Bossa, Samba, Up-tempo Bop, Swing, Afro- Cuban, Waltz, 5/4
- Sight Reading will be provided
Excerpts (LINKS WILL BE LIVE Mid-July)
- Alto Saxophone
- Tenor Saxophone
- Baritone Saxophone
- Trumpet (players interested in lead include playing a 2-octave G Major Scale and a 2 octave Bb Major Scale starting in the staff)
- Trombone (players interested in lead include playing a 2-octave G Major Scale)
- Piano/Guitar/Vibes (Play entire piece 2 times, first time read part and second time comp changes)
- Bass
- Drum Set
